Hello Readers!

Lets be honest, the current state of violence against women has drastically risen in Kenya. This is not to say that men do not experience domestic violence or to disregard men who have fallen victims to this, we see them, we mind them and we do not encourage any form of violence towards men. However, women make 90% of the victims, yes, 90%. Meaning, women are the most affected.

More than often, forums, agencies and coalitions that have the mandate to help victims of domestic violence have WOMEN helping fellow women and not enough men. Sure, it is a good thing that we have a tonne of women FOR women but it's about time we drag our brothers along. They too can get involved and help. Here are some ways men can help stop domestic violence against women:

  • First things first, if you are the abuser, STOP IMMEDIATELY and SEEK HELP. Listen guys, there is absolutely NO SHAME in owning up to being an abuser. It is a sign of strength and accountability. So go ahead and make this world a little safer and SEEK HELP.

  • If you are a father/ a father figure, teach your children to respect women and girls. It starts right from the roots. Children learn from those around them.

  • Be a role model to the youth, especially young boys. Do not be afraid to take it further by mentoring a few boys too, branch out.

  • EDUCATE yourself. Gents, do not be ignorant simply because you feel you are not affected by GBV in anyway. Listen and learn from women, always.

  • Be a member of forums and events that teach about gender based violence. Encourage some friends to join in too!

  • This has been said countless of times but seriously guys, BREAK OUT OF THE MAN BOX. Traditional masculine ideologies should not restrict you from being part of the change we are all hoping and working towards. Challenge these ideologies

  • Teach your children, including boys, that NO means NO

  • Lastly, simply STAND UP and SPEAK OUT.

We all have the power to effect change so do all you can to make this world a little safer.
