The 'Hyper-Sexualised' Black Woman Pandemic

sexism /ˈsɛksɪz(ə)m/

noun prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination, typically against women, on the basis of sex. "sexism in language is an offensive reminder of the way the culture sees women"

Now that we all understand what sexism means, allow me to go straight to the point.

A new research now shows that sexism is on a high time high ESPECIALLY in today's music videos. That is not all, the research goes on to show that BLACK WOMEN are the most hyper-sexualised in the said music videos.

To confirm this, every time I have had a chance to watch a music video, the men are usually the only ones fully dressed, head to toe INCLUDING socks and belts. The ladies? Barely anything. Save for a few who flaunt uncomfortable (very) tight pants and handkerchief sized tops.

THAT IS NOT ALL.

The same research goes on to show that these same music videos create a conducive context for violence against women and girls. Oh by the way, I am very much aware that these ladies consented to be in the music videos half naked and that I have no problem with BUT that sends a different message all together.

While there is nothing wrong with choosing to show your butt in music videos, I mean, at the end of the day we are all adults and we can make our own decisions but, what are you promoting/encouraging? Young adults who watch these videos are more likely to copy the sexual double standard in music videos. For example, men are shown to have many sexual partners and that THAT is admirable whereas women who do the same are seen as ‘sluts’, THE NERVE!

Bottom line is, the representation of women in music videos/pop culture is honestly, not pleasing. Women can express themselves however they want (butts out or in a hijab), my concern is how the music videos fuel stereotypes and fetishizes women , black women especially. It has become normal to sing or rap about women in an objectifying and degrading manner, NOT COOL GUYS. All these results to a growing number of misogynistic disrespectful young men and young beautiful girls with barely any self esteem left (since most compare themselves to video vixens) which if you ask me, can be very damaging, socially.

Music is art, art should be freely expressed, but do not fuel agendas that we are working tirelessly to bring to an end. Come on, it's 2019!
